better late than never, from Surviving The Golden Age: "Sometimes when you allow a child to decide what’s for dinner you wind up with mush. Unable to determine if he or she wants pasta, pizza, ice cream, brownies, hamburger, etc., they want it all. So, you start mixing and decide to let them eat it. But you know your adult stomach just can’t handle that type of abuse. Food is a gift of sustenance. To mix any and all possible forms of meal is to go beyond eating steak and having salad so the steak can have something to eat as well. And that leads me to Coin Under Tongue. Too often I find myself saying that a band didn’t do enough “stuff” on an album to really showcase itself. That is, every track on the album sounds pretty much the same. Now some people may enjoy that. But variety spices up life. Reception is filled with spice. I have a hard time figuring out which genre to place it in. The album opens up with “Beyond Yes”. You get a bass guitar that sounds like something out of Primus. Then you pop over to “Dogma Sheen” and all I could think of was a mix of The Cure and the Pixies. Next track, “Junksmith” and I felt like I was listening to a modern day Talking Heads. The next two tracks remind me of folksy Bob Dylan. Particularly “Boatman’s Song”. Then the next two tracks remind me of Black Sabbath with their old school Hard Rock feel. And you haven’t even reached the end of the album yet. It’s a bit distracting because I’m not sure what to call Coin Under Tongue or Reception other than good. And they don’t leave you searching for the Pepto Bismal. All in all, you’re bound to find at least one track you like. The problem is finding someone with a taste varied enough to like all of it. I still recommend giving it a whirl."

But sometimes Apple's technology shakes you to the bone and changes the time-space continuum, leaving us gasping for iAir and groveling for more of Steve Jobs' HTML5 jizz. But ladies and gentlemen, as much as I regret to re-inform you of yesterday's announcement, possibly sending you back to drooling on your iPuds and short circuiting them just in time so you can buy a new one in WHITE, we cannot ignore the fact that all these years of grueling negotiations have finally paid off. That's right: FRENCH MIAMI ARE ON ITUNES, FINALLY. At last you can let their appegiated guitars speed by like highway dividers, feeling the warm breeze of synth on your face, letting the beat pulse through the sun roof like street lamps at night. Motor Skills is the name of this new album and they will be using them to come to a small club in your shitty town in the coming months, where they will blow you away because you weren't expecting them to play nearly exactly and impossibly as you heard them on record. Big Up to Delusions of Adequacy for typing such nice things about Coin Under Tongue's Reception into an html document, and then uploading said document to a server where people from around the world can access it by way of any number of compliant browsers. "

With endorsements from Spoon’s Britt Daniel and the legendary Julian Cope, Coin Under Tongue comes with a promise to deliver on its new album Reception. Further adding to its pedigree, the album is released by Death By Audio — the home of A Place To Bury Strangers’ Oliver Ackermann. So, what’s the music like?

If you remember the band Swell, you’ve got a head start on understanding the sound of Coin Under Tongue. As a reference point, both bands trade on sharp lyrics and a veering between stripped-down and amped-up compositions. Coin Under Tongue, though, gets heavier than Swell ever did, throwing in some really fuzzed-out guitar and bass (“Night Weed,” “Beyond Yes”) and throwback riffing. “Beyond Yes” does a little ransacking of Mudhoney’s playbook when it wants to make its points. On “Junksmith,” the opening measures of feedback and subsequent guitar work show the influence of Ackermann’s approach to electric guitar. What’s curious about Coin Under Tongue’s sound is the way the drums sound thin and rough. Bands usually go for a sonic aesthetic and apply it equally to all instruments, but here the guitars sound like they’re played in an aircraft hangar while the drums sound like they were recorded in someone’s basement.

The title track “Reception” seems to have to do with a wedding reception at first, but with a line like “Coming through loud and clear,” it might be that the band is playing with a double meaning here (as in “receiving” a signal). The caterwauling vocals and guitars infuse this one with a menacing aspect that makes it anything but the genteel affair usually connoted by weddings generally.

“Seizure In The Stairwell” goes for unadorned, Waits-/Swell-like tunesmithing but there’s a low, rumbling presence lurking in the background. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Liars-like aggro experimentalism of “Conflicted,” whose nearly tuneless bursts of noise and screamed singing show the band’s raw side. There’s a decent amount of unusual pairing of musical styles on this album, and if it weren’t for the band’s competent melding of these styles it might come off as accidental or unfocused. How many bands would’ve or could’ve penned a cut like “Dogma Sheen,” where an 80s-style guitar intro (repeated during bridges) turns into a grimy, sludge-covered wall of noise? Not many, really, not many." - thanks David!

There will be a large review from le rapport du jour of Coin Under Tongue's Reception bookended by quotation marks directly after this sentence. "Coin Under Tongue: What an astringent jolt of a band name! Check this here review of their latest joint (rolled with metal shavings and warehouse dust):

“I came out of my shell - Into a cutesy neon hell,” sings Joe Kelly near the beginning of Coin Under Tongue’s new album, Reception, and during seven of the record’s nine songs, he does some serious screaming about it. As Kelly depicts his urban experience with a profusion of lyrics and a searing mixture of refined and unrefined post-punk guitar, bassist George Wilson and a trio of drummers (including regular band member Greg Wilson) help kick up a slamdance with metal polyrhythms that ground the noise.

Album opener “Beyond Yes,” which includes Kelly’s nifty description of the Bedford scene, invades the ears with twisted, trebly guitar cuttings and a vocal as deliciously distorted as Kurt Cobain’s on parts of Nevermind. “Dogma Sheen” clears the air with a volley of clean, Cure-like chords before the assault begins anew, and Kelly’s playing incorporates hints of Wire and P.I.L. during a luminous solo in “Junksmith.” After a mid-album respite comprised of a folk protest and a noir narrative, the volume rises again with “Reception,” a song that begins as a doom-metal dirge and quickly goes hardcore. With vivid, economic images that would make a writing teacher proud, Kelly screams about a wedding party that seems perfectly enjoyable, but instead features “a couple frozen in its prime.” It’s not the best song on the album, but the contrast between the singer’s perspective and the scene he describes is disturbing and rare.

In fact, it’s during the closing “Strong Things,” a mixed acoustic and electric song, when you start to realize that Kelly is a pretty good lyricist, something which can get lost underneath the sheer quantity of the words. “I know your schedule’s pretty packed / Mine’s just started unraveling,” he sings, over a strand of winsome, acoustic guitar, about an ex-lover from home who’s started to make it in New York. “It’s hard to hold onto strong things,” he later drones, applying a dab of lustrous black to the neon he sees around him. Kelly swipes a Stephen Malkmus chord progression to make the point, but the instrumental squall that follows is all Coin Under Tongue." - Thanks Philippe!

We think Julian Cope likes the new Coin Under Tongue album

Sisters Emerge from Death By Audio With Noisy New Album

Sisters is a lo-fi, noisy, garage-like duo that tries to make music that sounds much larger than what you think could be possible by two people.

Now they've graduated to a release on Narnack Records, titled Ghost Fits, due ot on September 28th. It was recorded at Civil Defense studios in Brooklyn by Jeremy Scott (Vivian Girls, These are Powers, Hollowpaw, Frankie Rose and the Outs).

Check out the songs "Sky" and "Highway Scratch" from their upcoming album Ghost Fits. The songs start out as seemingly straight-forward pop songs, before wandering off of the pop map in a fury of noise and cacophony.

"Wanting to create as big of a noise as possible with just guitars and drums, Aaron started playing his guitar through two amps, augmenting the monster sound he created with pedal-based loops. Upping the ante, Matt built a custom analogue drum synth into his kick drum. Running this feed through effects in real time allowed him to get a wholly unique sound out of his kit, completing the Sisters' one-of-a-kind, 21st Century alt-rock sonic experience," reads the band's bio.

Sisters is the brain child of Aaron Pfannebecker (vocals / guitar) and Matt Conboy (drums / keyboards). They take cues from inspirations like Pixies, Pavement, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth; then they combine that with their role in Death by Audio, a venue/collective/rehearsal space/guitar pedal factory in New York.

Matt is one of the founders of Death by Audio, and Sisters is part of that collective. They got their start by playing impromptu shows there.

"We would have these 'sneak attacks' as we called them, where we would set up really quick in between bands in the hallway or doorway and just play five or six songs. We did that for awhile, then eventually people asked us to play," said Aaron.

We spent the early hours of yesterday's meltdown within the cool confines of the DBA loft putting together mailers containing the new Coin Under Tongue CD. They say you have to get these out a month before the "Release Date" so people have time to put it "in the next issue" - but is this theory even relevant anymore? Who knows? We screenprinted these boxes and then went to Annie's (Au Revoir Simone) birthday/ 4th of July backyard party jam. Some people climbed on the roof for a glimpse of the fireworks, which were a little hard to see this year because THEY moved them to the west side of Manhattan.

After 2 rounds of Legal Karate and 2 Billion screenprints later, enough blood, sweat, and fears have been shed to produce a physical document of one bands' total chronic devotion. Available in only the finest audio distribution facilities in Minneapolis at the moment, SEAWHORES' Blunt Force To The Everything doesn't play friendly on the genre jungle gym. Cybernetic arcade industrial hardcore that ends on a beach of foamy drone, it's a complete loose-glove slap to the face of barely thrown together lo-fi lazy techno-hippies. They simply do not make them like this anymore. Where's the adventure these days? Where are the Indy's worshipping the Temple of Boom? It takes giant boulders chasing away the thieves to keep a treasure this tight and Seawhores have got 'em.

This past weekend at Death By Audio, we got a chance to see Eddy Current Suppression Ring play to a sold-out crowd of dirty, sweaty garage rockers. The four-piece from Melbourne, Australia plays a Stooges-inspired brand of punk that incorporates a few killer riffs and loud drums. It was a fun show to see live. One hundred and fifteen vinyl records have been pressed of the STARRING debut, Wife of God, and then inserted in sleeves that were produced by the best screeners in town, KAYROCK. There are so few of these we can't even give them to our friends because were dicks! But, they will be for sale on June 10th at Death By Audio because Starring will be raising money for their upcoming tour, which has been listed on the right side of this blog. It should also be noted that Michael from Starring's other band, Skeletons, will be playing that night. And if that's not enough, we're going to throw Grooms on top of the dogpile which should amount to one crazy mountain of a night. Founded in 2008 by Pterodactyl drummer Matt Marlin and Skeleton$ keyboardist Mike Gallope, STARRING revisits the terrain of progressive rock by distilling it to its essence. Starring plays “prog rock” because they are in love with a sense of unscripted fun, looking to spit beer, exhilarate and electrify rather than be like "dude, check my chops.". Starring combines the forces of farfisa, viola, guitar and bass to sculpt driving, heavy, high-speed sound guns aimed at stealth bomber choruses. Beneath it all, Matt Marlin’s notoriously frenzied drumming, which is as furious here as on any Pterodactyl record, propels this distortion-addicted quintet from one transfixing riff to the next.

All five members contribute vocals over the course of the record, experimenting with figures of authority, blissed-out psychedelic narratives, or simple primal scream therapy. And each song is no less diverse in its ambitions: “July” is a monstrosity about a horrific encounter at a holiday barbeque, with a mathy, scattershot verse turning on a dime into an anthemic, Stooges-inspired chorus. “Get Over Here, Disco!” sets fire to a catchy two-note riff, and twists it into a shout-your-brains-out headbanger. And the album's final track threatens to cannibalize everything that’s preceded it, churning along for minutes in a brutal, spellbinding jam, only to be interrupted by dreamy voices that eerily plead: “Won’t you be my body double?”

Their genre-pretzeling debut, Wife Of God, will be available June 8th on Death By Audio Records. Thank you.

A couple of weeks ago, I was going to work and noticed that this cat had peed right in a pocket of my manbag. This cat has also been known to pee in Travis' guitar pedal bag. It has no name.

And so it begins. The transistion out of Post-Post-Post-Punk into Re Grunge (that being groups emulating the Sub-Pop / Am Rep pre-Nevermind era - not to be confused with 'Post-Grunge', that's, like, Creed or some shit). And you really couldn't ask for a better spearhead. Tickling the new wavers with occasional drum machines and moments ofCure-ish pop before slamming into the full on Nirvana - Bleach / Cherubs - Icing sludge rock, they remind the kids of what their parents were likely blasting while they were shitting a diaper, and send their parents (us) into nodding approval - yes, this is how you do it. Memorable and catchy, noisy and edgy. The main difference here is instead of using Black Sabbath, Void and Pixies as their main starting points of reference, it's Nirvana, Melvins and Joy Division ---------------------------------------------------------- Currently signed to Death By Audio Records (who also make the most fucked effect pedals on earth and are headed up by Oliver Ackermann of A Place To Bury Strangers) they've actually been releasing their new album, 'Hussies At Bay' as it's being recorded, as well as their first EP Reception (aka So Far) - so this is totally legit. --------------------------------------------------------- What I'm finding highly amusing is how everyone seems terrified to use the term 'Grunge' to describe CUT, dancing all about without saying it when that is undoubtedly the largest element in their sound. Grow some fucking balls, limpwrists - you're rock critics - no one thinks you're cool anyway, whatta ya got to lose by being honest? --------------------------------------------------------- Anyway, these guys are the opening salvo, let's see how far it goes!

Here's what's going on:

1) On February 26th, 2010, a recording summit will be held in the kitchen of the DBA compound for the recording of new 7" record- a split featuring 2 Brooklyn drum phenoms: David Moore (from the sometimes DBA free/noise/jazz/rock band The Statler Bros.) & Ches Smith . The session will be recorded/engineered by Steve from Wodger Records. The tentative title of this ultra-limited (100) pressing will be "BBQs of the Future".

2) DBA records finally wrangled SEAWHORES back into the corral. The tracks for a new DBA exclusive Seawhores 12" have been compiled and the pressing plant paperwork is being filed out as we speak. This too will be an ultra-limited pressing of 100 units.

One blinking red flood light ended up in the toaster. People really started pouring in around 11 and that's when I had to start really DJing. Played some Bee Gees. Set off the smoke machine every 15 minutes. People climbed all over the cargo net that was strung up above the people dancing down below. We had a countdown and at midnight Brian cut an old guitar that had been hanging from the ceiling for years. I played "Surfin' Bird" right at midnight for about 15 minutes because I was having a hard time finding a better record. Its hard to get out of a cargo net when you're drunk. While they have yet to release an album, Brooklyn duo Sisters have been busy releasing split 7"s with JEFF: the Brotherhood and helping run Death by Audio the venue. Death by Audio, the label, will release their full-length debut in the spring of 2010. The guys don't have any local shows till February (when they'll open for Atlas Sound and Neon Indian) but they play Toronto on January 15 with Little Girls. Singer-guitarist Aaron Pfannnebecker, and drummer/keyboardist Matt Conboy sum up their 2009, and explain why two people need so much volume...

You spent 2009 working on your debut album. How's that coming along?

Aaron: Yeah, we started in September. We are starting to mix it this week actually. I am really psyched. It's sounding great.

Matt: It's coming along great. We're working with Jeremy Scott at The Civil Defense. I think some times I get impatient, and want the thing finished sooner, but I know that it will be worth the wait to make it exactly how we want it.

Sisters use more amps than the average person might expect from two people. What's with that?

Aaron: I send loops sometimes to one stack and sometimes play out of both. We also babysit, so sometimes kids can hang out in them if we need to play a show.

Matt: The short answer is that I can't really play drums quietly, so Aaron's guitar needs to be loud enough for me to hear it. We also try to fill out a wide spectrum of sound, but having only two members means compensating with amps etc. Plus I think we sound a lot better now than when we just had one guitar amp.

What was your most memorable musical moment of 2009?

Aaron: Making up music in my bedroom with some new toys and making music with Matt.

What about non-musical moment?

Matt: New years with my girlfriend in Lake Taho, CA.

Aaron: Swimming, traveling to see friends.

Favorite place to play in NYC?

We both really have fun at the Dead Herring.

Best new NYC-area band?

Aaron: I guess, she is not so much new, but new to me. I really like Noveller a lot.

Matt: Coasting.

What's the best and worst thing about being in a band in NYC in 2009?

Matt: It seems like NYC is more saturated with venues and bands. This is great because there are lots of awesome people doing inspiring things (both playing music and running spaces). But it's also frustrating because you often have to wade through a lot of mediocrity and crap to find them.

Aaron: The best is all the great bands and venues to play. The worst is I guess the uptight seriousness that comes with a place like this.

What were your favorite albums of 2009?

Aaron: Lots, Jeff: The Brotherhood - Heavy Days, Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion, Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, Atlas Sound -Logos.

Grooms released their debut album this year. How'd that go? It's been awesome and exciting. We're just finishing up our first tour. 4 out of 5 weeks down. I can't wait to get around actual shampoo again.

You also changed your name, which can prove difficult. How'd that go? I'm so glad I'm not in a band called The Muggabears anymore. Once we decided to change the name and basically start a new band, it just felt super natural (and necessary).

What was your most memorable musical moment of 2009? Playing with Jim (on drums) for the first time. Emily and I had to go turn our amps up by about 100% immediately. He's crazy loud.

What about non-musical moment? Hmmm... how about getting back into the dating world again?

Favorite place to play in NYC? We played this show underneath the Highline park in Manhattan. It was beyond zany. I hope we can play a place like that again. I'm pretty sure that actual place won't be played again though.

Best new NYC-area band? Talk Normal. Deradoorian.

What's the best and worst thing about being in a band in NYC in 2009? Best - being around friends all the time who are also playing in bands and doing really really creative things. Worst - Having no money to replace broken equipment.

This is somewhat shocking considering it's ACROSS A FUCKING OCEAN and the song has only been available as a song on the downloadable version of the Pursesnatchers/CUT split 7". Please bear with us as we let the Googlebot do a hack translation of what they had to say:

Coin Under Tongue Leaving George Wilson - exactly, and quite rightly, the former Dirty on Purpose-guitarist - and the singer Joe Kelly as the main card in this Brooklyn Raised three-man lineup. Many American music genre writers continue like Coin Under Tongue at the intersection of post-hardcore and 80s post-punk, but it is certainly wide open to their interpretations in this case. A jewel of overeating Brooklyn Romantikerserien with one foot still in the 1980s in Britain.

Hussies At Bay review

The kind people over at Audio Current took the time to write some pretty flattering things about Coin Under Tongue's FREE Hussies At Bay EP.

"I went on Death By Audio’s blog and found they were giving the Hussies At Bay EP away for free, my life will never be the same.

In ancient times some people used to believe that if you put a gold coin under the tongue of the recently deceased, it would help them pay the ferry toll to cross the river Styx and enter the Underworld. If they don’t put the coin under tongue the dead man’s spirit will haunt them forever. Coin Under Tongue might be one of the best band names ever.

The first track on Hussies At Bay has a riff that would sink the Titanic, think Rage Against The Machine crossed with Aerosmith and a touch of Tool. Yeah, that’s right, I said it. On this one Joe Kelly uses his mid range bark that’s raspy, punk and ballsy enough to stand up to the rest of the sonic onslaught.

Next is ‘Roll Child’, which sounds nothing like the last track. It starts with a Post Punk beat and a guitar lick that is more reminiscent of Joy Division than anything Hard Rock. Once Joe decides to overdrive his buttery vocals the Coin’s sound becomes more obvious. The song quickly shifts into a more garage feel and starts uncontrollably oozing swagger. I can’t imagine what might possibly come next.

‘Shaven Clean’, could be what the amazing Death From Above 1979 might sound like if they hadn’t broken up. Kelly cycles through one epic fizzling guitar tone after another while the bass holds down a dope clean groove.

Finally, ‘This Flag Is A Scythe’, is the brilliant closer. It’s got a strong shuffling Post Punk beat, with Jamie Cook guitar swats. Again, the guitar tones are untouchable and different from the previous tracks.

A flawless EP that proves Coin Under Tongue will soon have the whole Underworld at their feet.

She has a grey stripe of hair on top of her head. There are long whisps of hair that come out of her ears and her meow sounds like she smokes kitty cigarettes. Her day consists of climbing rope-wrapped hot water pipes and pissing on brand new white couches (that was before she was fixed, mind you). Mac's uncle draws a calendar like this every freaking year and gives them out as gifts. Just... damn.

This is the skateboard rack next to the front door. It seems a little understocked right now. This is Aaron from Sisters chillin' in his room, back when he lived in the DBA loft. He is known for his uncanny, mutantesque reading abilities. This is an art piece George is working on. It's thousands of holes punched from confidential envelopes. This is another art work from George, with thousands of jewels, hole punched confidential envelopes, and the handwritten line ,"Don't make fun of my Friday night..." over and over again. The line is from a song performed by the band Xiu Xiu. These are two floatation devices for children that are tied up into the ceiling above George's art studio room. He hade a resin sculpture of these, the two animals' heads being replaced by two human hands forming a vagina. This is a picture of a used spinning firework wheel nailed in close proximity to a smoke detector.

A Small Collection of Signs

The loft's population is in constant flux, therefor its inhabitants must sometimes leave notes or signs to communicate with their fellow ranchers. Bands blowing through town are a major contributor to these postings, as well as house rules declared in moments of clarity by individuals clinging to their sanity within this constantly swirling hellhole party prison. Take a gander!

This is a brilliant idea. It used to say 8:45 to 9PM but apparently someone has amended it to 8:45 AM to 9PM. That's obviously a joke so this rule has been civilly disobeyed. If only they had Wii remotes in the shape of dusters and mops...

That's a lil dish goin' "Yay". Lot's of people tend to eat in this place which is weird because it's basically a hobo fallout shelter. Wine glasses here have a shelf life of 30 minutes and sometimes you're washing plates in screenprint ink with a sponge that looks like a used Dr. Scholl's pad , but hey.... well, no, it is pretty shitty. Paper plates are available by request.

These notes are like brother and sister.

This is one of the first "Marc Ramsey" tags ever in Brooklyn. Dude is blowing up like Tit Brace or Turkey Clit or whoever those famous taggerz are. Normally we don't let people tag the house, but it's Marc Ramsey and he loves us and it's sprayed on the door to the spray paint room.

This all started because Dirty On Purpose confiscated Coin Under Tongue's lucky band sandwich. It has since been completely ignored like an email from Prince Nashid informing us we've won the Zimbabwe lottery. Or a soundman asking us to turn it down or else he turn off the PA. Whatever, dude.

That's where the TRASH goes, in that big ass can next to the stairs,with the pen used to keep dart scores hanging above it, pointing into the hoop you should aim all your balled up electric bills. You've been a wonderful audience.

STATLER BROS. @ HOME SWEET HOME - July 31st

If you follow this blog, you might remember a post a long, long time ago about a noise/free/jazz project called The Statler Bros. , that consists of Joe (Coin Under Tongue), John, and wunderdrummer David. Just to recap, The Statler Bros. use two feedback looping rigs, no "real" instruments, and a jazz drummer. Not feedback, like "oww, that high pitch sound is killing me!" more like "wow, this sounds like 2001, space invaders, and fax machine static!" They will be playing (and recording) a show tomorrow, this Friday at around 8:30 PM at Home Sweet Home, which is just south of the Bowery Ballroom. IF you like dive bars and taxidermy, come on by. Also on the bill is our friend NATE and Nature Program. After the show is complete, the audio recording of the show will be posted here for the bees that are too busy.

DBA Showcase Review from Radio Flyer

Where: Death By Audio "Obviously, I wouldn't miss a show featuring two of my midyear Bands to Watch in 2009 playing in their own home space, which also happens to be the city's best DIY venue. Yeah, hottt.

I named Coin Under Tongue a band to watch without having heard them live. It was a bit of a gamble, but the recorded material was so strong, it seemed worth the risk. And after all, the Death By Audio collective (A Place to Bury Strangers, Dirty On Purpose, Grooms/Muggabears, etc) has yet to produce a band that falls short of amazing.

But nothing prepared me for exactly how amazing CUT would be live. The band pumped the room so full of smoke you could barely make out the folks in front of you, let alone the stage. Then, as they slowly emerged from the murk, the band cranked out some of the heaviest, nastiest post-hardcore I've ever heard.

The distorted bass crashes through like a drunk mammoth but the man behind the sound, George Wilson (oddly enough, formerly of slowcore dream-pop outfit Dirty on Purpose) is anything but clumsy, shredding some deliciously difficult riffs. The similarly-lumbering guitar cuts like a slow-motion buzz saw while Joe Kelly howls death metal renditions of secretly lovable melodies.

The band seemed a little underrehearsed for the show, stumbling more than once. This would have bothered me more, but truthfully, it was kind of nice to see the band, though skilled, are not infallible virtuosos. I was also pleasantly surprised by the variety the band offered, some songs more gentle or even downright pretty, some faster and post-punkier, some cleaner and some noisier - you'd be hard put to accuse this band of always sounding the same.

I was excited to catch Jeff the Brotherhood knowing nothing about them, but just based on the fact that they were selected to play between CUT and Sisters. Tennessee duo set up on the floor, and though that might have been just to speed up the transition between their set and Sisters', it seemed to be an ultimate gesture of solidarity. Literally playing from the midst of their not-quite-moshing audience, the band made the fans as much a part of the experience as they themselves were.

The downside, unfortunately, was not being able to see the band, except when guitarist Jake Orrall climbed on top of the amps on stage for a moment of rock-hero posing. Still, it was worth it.

The entire set found me unsuccessfully groping for a reference point - though JtB doesn't sound particularly "out there," they aren't easily pigeon-holed either. There are guitar-heavy moments that take a page straight from the classic rock and metal book, while just as often, the band sounds like a tidied up lo-fi pop outfit.

Whatever it was, the songwriting was superb and the performance thrilling. JtB sound most like some lost classic from greatest moments of the 1980's American indie scene, but like a sonic chameleon, the band wouldn't sound out of place much of anywhere. It would just sound damn good. [MySpace] Rounding out the night was Sisters, another personal favorite. Last time I saw them live, I was impressed but not blown away. This time, the band left no question of their pure awesomeness. There's something awkward about the band's two members - I could just imagine them as dorky third graders. But if they ever were, they certainly aren't dorky now.

Banging out a constant stream of lo-fi gems, Sisters are punk rock in a totally unclicheed way. Though they have some technical skill and their songs are not simplistic, the duo seems more interested in crashing and smashing and making a racket than in playing carefully. I'm not a fan of the prerecorded parts, only because I like seeing music produced right in front of me, when I'm at a show. Still, those parts weren't too many or too involved, just an invisible third person when an invisible third person was needed.

Cramped full of hooks and bright melodies, Sisters' music is pretty hard not to love. They wouldn't even need such evident concentration and effort and such unabashed enthusiasm to win over their audience, but putting this great of a live show with this great of songs is a combination you don't want to miss. From Brooklyn Vegan - "Tonight's show at Death by Audio should be deafening. JEFF shares the bill with noise-pop duo Sisters, who I've written about more than once already, and have become big fans of. Third on the bill are Sisters' Death By Audio Records label-mates Coin Under Tongue who make the kind of stoner, punk-inflected hard rock that Sub Pop used to specialize in, in the label's early days. (I'm talking Tad, Mudhoney, Das Damen). There's other influences in there too -- metal plays a big part, as does UK punk and postpunk I suspect. And there are some really nice guitar parts when the guys aren't stomping on the pedals but basically you're getting balls-to-the-wall, scream-the-chorus rock. It goes without saying Coin Under Tongue are really, really loud. But they've got songs to match the volume. They're finishing work on their new album, but have offered up a progress report of an EP that you can download at the top of this post. It rocks. (Thanks Bill!)"

A few weeks back, the bar known as Black Betty announced it was closing its doors forever. Actually, there's talk that Harvey Milk's Steven Tanner is opening a restaurant in its place - FUCK YEAH! I went down there to catch one last show and ended up recording two bands that night.

The first is Geezer On Diesel who are good friends of ours who play in several local bands such as The Shorebirds and Neckbeard Telecaster. The drummer's name is Geezer and he doesn't use a snare, which must attract a lot of women for them because I've had at least two girlfriends tell me they hate snares. Just big ass riffs pounding around like a two-ton brick of weed in the back of a pick-up rockin' dualies off-road, then breaking down in your driveway leaving an oil slick in the shape of Texas. Then there's this two piece that consisted of a drummer and tuba player called Wolff. That's right Wolff - you asked for it and they put another F on that bitch. The tuba player runs his mic through all these samplers and effects to create a symphonic marching band of sorts from the ground up. It's pretty amazing that something this cool could be made from blowing.

"Recording in A Place to Bury Strangers' Death By Audio Studios, it's almost too easy to draw comparisons between the Coin Under Tongue and APTBS. Hell, both bands share a love of love tooth-cracking discharges of guitar via extreme effects pedals. Yet, to leave the introduction with no more than notes of their similarities, is to ignore the fact that Coin Under Tongue are drawing from a far wider pallet than the feedback loving British acts of the late '80s and early '90s. On both "Reception" and "High Until We Die," Coin Under Tongue pair their love of piercing feedback with guitar riffs which are practically doom-like at times. And while I can't say I ever wanted to hear a band channel both Sabbath and Joy Division in the same song, now that I have, I'm wondering why no one thought of this combination sooner."

Coins have released an EP of the songs they have recorded so far for their 2nd LP, Reception, called The So Far EP. It was made available for download last week through Absolutepunk.net, or you can just go directly to the MediaFire link here and download it with one less click. Britt from Spoon just mentioned in an interview that he gets excited when he hears they are recording a new album. Coin Boyz are recording an album this very moment, and are in contract negotiations with Doug from Pursesnatchers and Annie from Au Revoir Simone to perform a pop collaboration with the band. Five Bands to Watch in [the rest of] 2009Coin Under Tongue - For some reason, when I first learned of this band, I got the impression they were some sort of chilled out Americana thing - in fact, I distinctly remember listening to such music, but apparently, I was listening to a different band entirely (no idea what). Coin Under Tongue are LOUD and HEAVY, with the most massive distortion since A Place To Bury Strangers emerged a few years ago. You shouldn't be surprised to learn that I am NOT a metalhead at all, but with their relentlessly screaming vocals, this lumbering post-hardcore is well worth checking out.Sisters - I know, Death By Audio Records (also home to Coin Under Tongue) is cleaning up here! After being moderately impressed by Sisters at Dead Herring House this spring, I got my hands on some of their tunes, and I got a whole lot more excited. The pair garners a lot of not-undue comparisons to No Age, last year's noise pop/noise punk more straight-forward. On the one hand, this means duo. But Sisters are a little more down to earth - their songs are shorter and they are rather less sophisticated than No Age, button the other hand, they sure pack a punch. They sound a heck of a lot like Sonic Youth's punkiest side and that's a very good thing to sound a heck of lot like.

Recording for Death by Audio, the effects pedal company, recording studio, and record label helmed by A Place to Bury Strangers'Oliver Ackermann, you know before pressing play that there will be guitar -- noisy, gnashing, industrial tools on a factory floor guitar. And sure enough, "Beyond Yes," the latest mp3 release by Coin Under Tongue, has that wonderful, metal mashing sound, twisting and tearing their early post-punk influences into unfriendly, noisesome ecstasy.

The Death Fresh Krew (Sisters, Coin Under Tongue) hit the road once again for a 12-hour, 1 stop tour of Groton, CT. The place was called the Backstage Rock Bar, which is connected to Rose's Cantina. Our roadie Kaite called to verify what type of establishment this was on our way there-

Kaite: Do you have tacos?

Rose's: No, we don't serve food.

Kaite: Do you have strippers?

Rose's: Ummm, yeah, we have erotic dancers.

Arriving early, the road warriors decided to hit up some KFC, a rarity in NYC. What they got was some greasy, wimpy chicken, as if the bird never got off the couch in it's life. Jell-O wings. When they got back to the club, the place was PACKED!!! (with ghosts). We found an old dune buggy behind the club. The show got pushed back just a little to see if maybe a hobo would come in and ask for change or a junkie might need to borrow the bathroom. Waiting for the guests to arrive, a few anonymous band members slipped into the strip club next door where they found Little Mrs. Droopy-Tit showing off her clit piercing WHILE EATING FUCKING CHINESE FOOD LAYING ON STAGE! There was also an old Tyson fight on, thankfully.

Eventually Sisters played and sounded fucking great. The Backstage bar has the best PA you will ever find in a strip mall, hands down. Coin Under Tongue played an abbreviated set so they could continue talking to this self-proclaimed "nice Satanist" who proceeded to shower the band with shots while dropping the bomb that HIS FUCKING WIFE WAS FUCKING SOME OTHER DUDE IN HIS CAR AS WE SPEAK!. He is currently employed teaching learning disabled people how to cook. You know the guy, there's one in every town.

Our CT allies, Total Bolsheviks, out-cut CUT by only performing 2 songs with their new accomplice, a chick in a creepy Nixon mask, spewing sheets of white noise into the crowd, much to the dismay of lesbian biker chicks at the front bar.

Some strange (or impossibly inebriated) girl got thrown out for accusing the bartender of stealing her drink. Greg yelled at the guy in McDonalds on the way home about not putting enough salt on his fries and then crawled around the van like some dude wiggin' out on acid at Bonnaroo, claiming "claustrophobia".

Sisters played 2 Northisde Festival Shows this past weekend. Pop Tarts Suck Toasted had some praise: I only spent a short bit of time with the music of Sisters prior to my Northside Fest show. I knew what it was about, I knew I liked it, I just didn't know how much I would love it live, but sure enough as soon as this duo got started I was hooked. Now the obvious comparisons will be made to other noisy two pieces like No Age, but let's just say that it's not quite the same thing as No Age. Yes it is noise punk but it's not the same thing. Seriously. These two dudes flat out killed it, even if they were cheating with their pre-recorded parts (according to The Great Unwashed's Sean Kuhl) this band was the biggest and best surprise of the night! as well as Prefix Magazine: I arrive at Death By Audio a few hours later, where another female-led mosh pit emerges for Brooklyn band Sisters. The women are clearly putting their male counterparts to shame at the Northside Festival. Before Sisters play, there’s a guy in the back room who apes Panda Bear’s live set up by utilizing two Roland SP-404 samplers and a mixer. Sadly, no one seems to know who he is, but he creates some affable techno, clogged with bleeps and whimsical samples. Sisters play after he finishes, and are the latest band to emerge from the community at the Death By Audio loft. They share a love of blistering volume with their roommates in A Place to Bury Strangers. Sisters are a two-piece guitar and drums outfit, with occasional keyboards and processed beats. They set up in front of a giant pile of foreboding amps, leaving audience members in no doubt that their ears are going to be shredded by the end of this performance.Sisters look great—drummer Matt has a huge afro that rocks back and forth as he pummels his drums, and the stack of amps acts like a third member of the band. It certainly causes people up front to question the validity of their decision to stand so close to the stage when singer/guitarist Aaron begins scraping great sheets of noise from his instrument. They lack the thinness that some two-piece bands discover when all the bass frequencies are stripped from their music, and have a great pop-noise thing going on. Imagine a punky My Bloody Valentine with John Bonham on drums. Sisters trigger an instant reflex to dance and sing in half the audience, and some of the widest smiles of the entire festival can be seen when two little grunge kids join the mosh pit at the end. A special moment. Sisters play Glasslands on Wednesday June 17th with My Teenage Stride, Knight School and the Gutsies. The Show was mentioned in The New Yorker of all places!

Also this week, Coin Me Badd appeared on The Edge with Jake Sasseville, a late night variety show that airs on ABC affiliates, where they played their song "Roll Child". They had to play it twice to a crowd because Jake called the song "Roll On" in the first take - whoopsee! C.U.T. trivia - did you know they were not allowed to play "Night Weed" because Denny's hates gardening? The boys did rally at the end of the taping to play "High Until We Die", to which Jake threw up his hands and said, "Fuck it." That video will most likely never be seen, believe that.

Please don't watch the above mentioned performance, the sound is worse that any SNL band taping you've ever seen. The show itself is A.O.K. though.

When a practice space is shared among several bands, there will always be some bitching about people using another band's equipment. Someone will come into the practice space to find that their amp has been left on for god knows how long, someone will wonder why there are five fucking mic stands huddled together in the center of the room, and bass players will fume over knobs being turned from their predestined, tape-marked settings.

Then someone will get so pissed they leave a note taped next to their guitar that usually takes a tone similar to gangsta rap, filled with threats and put downs. Usually the one person that actually did fuck with their guitar never sees the note and the rest of the bands laugh at it. It becomes so funny that it deserves a parody, which is what Coin Under Tongue did here (click letter to enlarge) :

This man Steve speaks to me sometimes, mostly about music. Mostly about music recording equipment - he's a veritable encyclopedia of music recording techniques and devices. His last name is Silverstein. He sometimes brings in these letterpressed sleeves that contain noise records and I buy them for $13 dollars. He has two bands, Christmas Decorations & Bleaks, but his label WODGER puts out other artists as well. Christmas Decorations's "Far Flung Hum" has made multiple laps on the turntable in the loft, I find it to be good party music, if your party is having a good time. It's the yin of the Bleaks yang, the former crawling towards a more avant-garde, minimalist creep territory. Wodger's latest release is from Nick Forte, formerly of Rorschach, entitled "Defeated".

MEGAFRIENDS ALERT!!! - PURSESNATCHERS

Pursesnatchers are one of the many band branches that snapped off of the recently chopped-down Dirty On Purpose tree. Multi-instrumentalist Doug Marvin is the main composer, with assists from Jared, Harold, and wife Annie (Au Revoir Simone). Classic melodic indie-pop is their game, but the lyrics are the creeper that will keep you coming back. Take "Library Date" (see their MYSPACE here) for example, with its recollection of innocent kisses before the heartbreaking observation of "Our love was a product of particular times", (hold breath here) then break over the chord changes that hammer the real truth: "and we can't go back". Of all the DOP branches, Pursesnatchers are definitely the branch that fell closest to the roots of that mother band. I went to their last show at Union Hall and happened to record a couple of live tracks posted here. One thing I can tell you is that as a live band, Pursesnatchers bring the rock a helluva lot more than on the recordings (check out the "Baseball On The Radio" recording here). You can catch a triple whammy of a bill at Cameo in Brooklyn on May 14th, when the Snatchers share the stage with our very own SISTERS. JEFF: The Bogmen brought their way-down dirty Delta jet blues, tracking mud all over our compound for a full week of sweetness. BLACK PUSS dropped in from Venus to rage our stage - Brian is a hurricane of good ideas. GROOMS swept their cape of mystery rock over the tiles, even covering a Coin Under Tongue song. SISTERS got fantastic and bombastic under the dropped ceiling before heading out on a three-legged tour. MUDBOY brought the whole goddamn forrest inside the show- frogs, fireflies, and all. Salt For Desserts is Kaite Murphy's one-woman noise project in which she only uses Death By Audio pedals. And by only we don't mean to say she's brand exclusive, we mean to say that's all she used to make sounds, just 8 DBA pedals hooked up to a Total Sonic Annihilation recorded direct- no guitars, no mics, no synths, no kazoos. Just pure signal degeneration, oscillation, and infinite feedback loops controlled by switches, knobs, signal path manipulation, and occasionally light sensors. Half the pedals used were garden variety boxes, such as the Interstellar Overdriver Deluxe and the Super Sonic Fuzz Gun, while others were more exotic one-offs, such as the Wave Destroyer and the Fuzz Fuzz Fuzz.

Multi-tracked and mixed in a kitchen by Joe Kelly, these two audio explorations are available to download for for free FOREVER. Like the post said below, Coin Under Tongue spent April Fools Day in New Jersey at the Starland Ballroom filming for the TV show The Edge with Jake Sasseville. A total of five bands played 2 songs each and things could not have gone smoother. We shared a dressing room with Me Talk Pretty and Socratic because things were a bit packed- trading jokes, drinking beer, and eating greek salad. Each band gave it their all for the cameras. Houston Calls performance will literally shoot white hot plasma radiation all over your face if you can stay up late enough to catch it. The man they call "Okie" in particular is like one of the greatest performers I've ever seen - he's like a 2-liter of 7-up filled with alka-seltzer, baking soda, vinegar and The Taz - you can only have good times when he's around. The Sleeping came in and ripped the Starland Ballroom a new mouth, but in a very melodic way. Coin Boyz ended the night with "High Until We Die" which may never be shown due to it's obscene aviation references. After taking a picture in front of the tank acrosss the street, we all headed to Denny's, who sponsored the event. Syrup shots ensued, the rest is history.

I know this sounds crazy, but Coin Under Tongue are going to be filmed playing at a huge frikkin ballroom in Jersey for this late night T.V. show called "The Edge with Jake Sasseville" followed immediately by an all-expense-paid dinner at Denny's on Wednesday, April 1. If ANYONE wants to go to this for free, please email me and you will get a +1. Heyyyyoooo Jersey, anybody home? Supposedly, all the bands from the taping will be hanging out in this Denny's after the show @ 752 State Route 18 East Brunswick, NJ 08816 @ 7:30PM.

What could possibly be the next step for CUT? MSG & Sizzler? Radio City and Bennigan's? Probably more like Dead Herring and White Castle.

Kick The Bucket

NPR is constantly being streamed into my brain. You can hear bands on air (see post below) and learn about the origins of English phrases. Pat O'Conner from grammarphobia.com was a guest recently and the phrase "kick the bucket" came up. Neither Brian Lehrer nor Pat knew where the phrase came from so they asked listeners to call the station if they knew. No one called! So I felt pretty smart when I sent this email: "I believe the term comes from the act of suicide, where one is standing on a bucket. Therefor, kicking the bucket...." but then a week later Pat sent this back to me: "Thanks for your email. I've had time to do a little checking of my own. It seems that there are two possible explanations for the phrase "kick the bucket," but as the Oxford English Dictionary notes, we unfortunately don't know which is the sure thing.

Here are the popular theories (if you can call such grim propositions "popular"):

(1) In the 1500s, "bucket" was a word for a beam or a yoke on which something could be suspended (from the Old French buquet). A pig was often hung by its heels from a beam (or "bucket") before or just after slaughter, and thrashed a bit in its final spasms. Therefore, to "kick the bucket" was to die.

(2) The "bucket" that's a pail has an uncertain etymology, but the OED compares it with the Old English buc, meaning a "pail," a "vessel," or a "belly." A suicide (or someone about to be executed) might stand on an overturned bucket with a noose about his neck, then strangle when the bucket was kicked away. Hence "kicking the bucket" meant dying.

The first published citation for the expression comes from Francis Grose's A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1785): "To kick the bucket, to die." The expression also appears in a collection of American proverbs from 1789, according to the Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang.

Random House agrees with the OED that the origin remains uncertain "despite much speculation." But Eric Partridge's A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English goes for the slaughterhouse explanation. So does Cassell's Dictionary of Slang, which calls the suicide theory "rather less likely." Wow, thanks for the detailed response, Pat! What's interesting is that a change in the most widely accepted definition of the word "bucket" might have possibly forced us to imagine a new origin for the phrase, in order to keep its meaning intact. I wonder if other phrases have had similar transformations? How else might "kicking the bucket" result in death? Here's two I came up, can you think of any others?

Get In The Ambulance (LTD)

While hanging out over at Jay Space's place, I was introduced to a Jeremy Kay. He told me he was the bass player in a band called Ambulance LTD. I sort of flipped out a little bit because I had heard them on NPR a few months back. They played a new song live on air and I actually considered going to their show later that night based solely on their performance. Half fear of not knowing a band and half fear not knowing anyone else that might be interested kept me from attending that night, but I did try to keep up with their neverending legal battle with the now bankrupt TVT that have prevented the band from officially releasing any material that would be from their next album. I believe the band is able to just call the songs "demos" and try to spread the songs to their fans, but there is nothing "demo" about these songs.

"Ivy" is the type of song that you feel like you've heard before, like from your childhood, and now finally you've found out what that song is. The melody is instantly memorable because it's as if you've already been humming in your head before the band got around to recording it. And listen to the vocals in the video, that shit is live, on key, tight and rare.

We have big plans for the future for this Doom Pop squad, but right now we have 20 tapes. We had 50 but 30 were stolen! What do we know about Adam, the man behind the meat curtains that lead to the control center that is the machine called C-Hores? We know about his dirty little secret 80's power synth band Arctic Universe. We know he has played with one of our favorite Brooklyn bands VAZ on several occasions. We know he co-wrote a song with a Playstation song generator called "College Walls" and the video is at the end of this post. He's also a great screenprinter and one of the funniest story tellers ever. If his talents were athletes at an Olympic event, he'd have to take up 4 tracks on a 3 man relay race. And that's just a summer event!

Dude Ranch Party

Back in June of 2008, Emily from The Muggabears started a blog called "Dude Ranch Party" to document the going-abouts of the DBA loft. But as fellow bloggers already know, bloggin' ain't easy and the site has gotten stale. "Dude Ranch" is what the loft here was called on this ancient Myspace page . The name never really stuck, although some still jokingly refer to it as such. The best post from "Dude Ranch Party" has to be the WHEEL CHAIR JOUST NIGHT (click for videos), A.K.A. Tim's birthday. Tim used to live at the loft for about a year and is in this great one man band Abandoned Lighthouse. On the night of his birthday, people got wasted and crashed the house wheelchairs into each other. If you look closely, you can see Mac wearing an Optimus Prime helmet into the melee. From about 2006-2008, there were 3 wheelchairs in the loft at all times. Downhill races were held, people were wheeled to bars in them, wheelies were popped. There were even times when the wheelchairs were used for their original purpose! Then one got thrown over a fence across the street and one never returned home from a bar and now we have one lonely, limping wheel chair. A wheelchair that needs a wheelchair.

Lux Interior is dead so we had to spend this weekend getting on the Drug Train and listening to our Cramps records. Can't barely make it through "Lonesome Town" without dropping a tear, but anyway, I had to also pull out the Napa State Mental Institute Show for olde tymes sake. This DVD was produced by Target Video (no, not that Target), who included a bonus feature that actually caught one of my 96 eyes this time. This video production company captured a lot footage of late 70's/early 80's punk, which they threw snippets of in this bonus feature.

One scene showed this shirtless noise-punk guy rattling tied together metal tubes on the floor for like 10 minutes. The floor was checkered, the walls were dirty and scrawled on, and a lot of the people standing around him looked like people at shows here. But what was really on those walls, before there was a camera in every fingernail? We might never know, but here are some photos of "The Loft" (our loft) so that the hyperbloggers of the future may complain about the resolution of our ancient cameras. Look at that thing on the left- that's just a place on a door where we clean screens. Stuff like that is crawling all over this place.

I don't know where this bike came from or why it's hanging from the ceiling. But I do know neon orange came from heaven. (this just in -2/08/09 UPDATE: from Joe Jurewicz via Hotmail - "I rode that orange bike home from the levee one night wasted. it was just sitting on the sidewalk so I took it. It's been hanging there ever since.")

A long time ago in a galaxy far away, some space cadet thought we were gonna sell beer out of that Coke machine. Then it died two weeks later. Then we stacked a stereo on top of it and had to go upstairs to switch the records. Then Mac woke up at 3 in the morning and decided he couldn't sleep until he had painted the entire machine black. It's totally black now except where this one circular sticker was. Now that the sticker is removed, you can see one bare, red circle of magnified Coke machine perspiration. The record changing routine got old so we pushed the machine in a far corner. The end. George from Coin Under Tongue drew this mural thing with charcoal. Who are these people? That woman looks cool, but the guy looks sort of like an intense novelist type- sorry, guy! Actually, we can't take credit for this. That pot rack has been hanging there since we moved in. Those steel cables are like 25 ft. to the ceiling, all just to hang a few pots! It's space saver for sure, but it hurts when you go to high five people under it.

The Boob Movie Game

So a few of the dudes (Alex, Mac, Joe, Dorothy, George, and many many more!) were hanging out at "the loft", that's the main living area of "the ranch" or Death By Audio studios... whatever. ANYWAY, some people were watching Nightmare on Elm St. on the projector upstairs while people downstairs wanted to listen to records - a common debate in the house. The people downstairs complained that the movie sucked and we just want to get high and listen to these records and the people upstairs rebutted that they were waiting to see if there were going to be any boob scenes. Then the people downstairs said, "Hey if you wanna see boobs, take this Elm St. shit out and put in something like... Edward Boobhands." From there, the next half hour became a game of Outburst, with people shouting out movie titles, replacing one word in the title with the word "boob. Here are the best:

Big Hugz in New London, Connecticut

For the first time this millenium, the entire Death By Audio roster hit the road together. With a little help from our friends in the Total Bolsheviks, we GPS'd our way up the road to the Oasis Pub in New London, Connecticut. A very courteous (and quite possibly homeless) man helped us parallel park our van with seriously 2" to spare.

DJ Charlie Chaplin got the room warmed up as the bands hauled their crap into the venue. The Coin Boys hung around outside smoking, where they noticed a pair of breasts defying the freezing temperature 20 feet above their heads. It's a busty bust sculpture high above the bar (see badly lit photo above) Aaron from Sisters took a pill that should have been reserved for giants and rendered himself happy and unable to drive. Sisters played a hurricane alarm loud, bedazzled set in front of the bathroom. Total Bolsheviks expanded on themes written within chapters that could be dated back to as far as 13 A.D. , given that you have ample translation dictated to you in your native language. Rounds of shots were fired at Coin Under Tongue which resulted in some very enthusiastic ape like headbanging from the band, which led to an outbreak of primal cheers among the patrons. There was a cool guy with a Wipers shirt up front.

The crown jewel of the night was when this man Rob showed up with his fast-food-on-wheels truck called "Roadside Grill". I had a nacho bacon chilli dog. Those are the four elements that lead to the center of my heart. Are you listening, ladies!?

Superfriends Spotlight! - The Muggabears

When they're not destroying their Rock Band instruments at the Death By Audio loft, The Muggabears record their own original music. Over the past few weeks they have been bringing over daily mixes of their upcoming album entitled... well, we don't know, the CDs they gave us are just blank white. Their music reminds me of those Japanese horror movies where the sexy girl with dark hair walks towards you sort of weird and you think "that's cool come over here, err...wait, something's not right here" but then it's too late and she's right in front of you, then you notice she crying black ink and her hair is actually dragon scales and you scream and she shakes you and says "what's wrong with you!?" and now she looks perfectly normal again and then you kiss her because you want to make sure she's real. Today they finally released one of these new jams out into the wylde (i.e. Myspace) and it definitely has a title that everyone can relate to: "Guitar Feelings". Have you ever rented a horror movie you remember seeing as a kid only to find out it’s not mysterious or spooky at all. In fact, almost all horror movies seem cheesy to you now. But somewhere lurking in your head is the version YOU remember, a version that your imagination has built into myth that no movie could live up to. That’s what I had carried around in my head for 20 years and had almost decided to try to remake a version of The Hangman, a slideshow animation of Maurice Ogden’s poem. I was haunted by the Hangman’s “buckshot eye” and “yellow twist of knotted hemp” long after my 7th grade English teacher rolled the projector back to the A.V. room. I scoured the internet for years in the hope that it might silence my attempts in vain to describe it to friends. 2 years ago I began storyboarding my remake. I was almost disappointed to find it on YouTube last month. Would it live up to my memory? Would it ruin my version? Turns out my version would have been shit. Message, art, direction – it’s all as intact now as it was back then. It’s truth is timeless and this video (although I pray for a clean DVD transfer someday) is UNFUCKWITHABLE.

The Artist's Guide Books

A couple of books turned up in the mail that you NEED to get. The Artist's Guide is a series of books (they're up to 2) that have been assembled by Matt Cassity & Sam Spratlin, with each book centered around topics such as "Making Money" (Vol.1) and "Dressing Fancy" (Vol.2). What's this have to do with DBA? Joe from Coin Under Tongue wrote some shit in them, that's what. But are these books worth buying? Hail yeah, because the prices have been drastically cut for today's economy, and the art in them alone is worth buying, particularly if you're an acid dealer looking for some blotter. These books are great to leave laying around so your sister visiting from out of town has something to flip through while she's waiting for you to wake up. Or for your dinner guests to peruse while you're frying fish. Those old issues of New York and The Believer are OK but a bit ordinary- don't we need something special? C'mon, how easy would it be to just click "Buy Now" and then how cool would it be when a week later it shows up unexpectedly? This one girl did drawings of her credit card bills in here, right down to the fine print- she is fucked!

If a true genius made the greatest clip art book specifically for girls' fashion graphics (and some try) the spine would read like Led Zeppelin IV, but instead of the Zoso symbols it would read: STAR, HEART, BUTTERFLY, FLOWER. If they made a Lucky Charms cereal specifically for girls, the moon and clover would have to go.

I know what you're thinking, "But how about a cute little bird? I like owls!" No, start cruising Craigslist now because you just lost your job. Like sticking your head inches from the flames of creative hell, I've held a straight face to many a fashion director as they've unveiled their fashion forecast revelations, such as "You know what's hot this year? Flowers!" Wow, you mean like those pretty plants that have symbolized beauty since the beginning of time!? Are you sure it's not those insects that metamorphisize from grotesque worms into magical winged creatures, like a metaphor for women coming of age? It's been out for while now, but if you haven't heard the voice of the Lord crack open the heavens, Chunklet's Rock Bible is out. Joe from Coin Under Tongue contributed a few choice scriptures, among the likes of other esteemed Rock prophets such as John Darnielle, Dale Crover, Brian Turner, and Ted Leo. Of course the lay leader of the congregation is Henry Owings, with help by the Chunklet choir boys (Brian Teasley, Dag Luther Gooch, all the heavy hitters...). The rules are made to be broken, but the book itself is a solid piece of print art with gold foil softcover, ribbon page holder, and that pinkish/red bleed on all the pages (what IS that shit!?) It can be easily digested is small passages, perfect for bathroom studies! Here's a couple of samples:

from The Good Word: Verse 17 (written by Joe) -"If you're the sensitive singer/songwriter type, don't throw in token curse words to prove how edgy you can be. Stick to the things you know, such as how you're the most important person in coffee shop because you're holding the acoustic guitar."

from The Sound on Stage: Verse 480 - "During the set, make yourself appear to be an expert by pointing at the monitor, then the bass player, then point up. Girls find that both hot and also somewhat perplexing."

The new issue of Chunklet: Issue 20 is also about to hit the newstands and if you order now, you can pay even more money to get a limited edition Ted Leo / Zach Galifianakis split 7". Have you seen this video of Zach interviewing Michael Cera? Whatta creep that guy, hiding in the ferns like that and assualting young boys.

I found this mp3 on the internet a few years ago on some random blog and here's the story-

It's supposedly a tape some guy turned in for a report on the "beat generation" for his English Literature class about The Doors!? I know, I know, The Doors have nothing to do with the beat generation, but that's the kind of stoned rocker logic we're dealing with here. The report was supposed to be written on paper, but to hell with that, this has got great old school cassette tape jump cuts and plenty of off-the-cuff acid insights, such as:

"back then the drug scene was high" and " 'jumping in her game' is, 'I want to be doing what you're doing right now' " Just give it a couple of minutes before these wisdom nuggets start hitting the tape. When I hear these types of recordings, it takes me there: a teenager's pot liar bedroom, a long-haired trying to man two tape machines at once while mom is yelling at him to come to dinner. Can you smell the mix?

Dirty on Purpose just got back from their mini tour with The Wedding Present. George told us to check out this video that their guitar player kept trying to explain to him. So that's what blogs are for and here it is, just in time for Halloween. It's like a forklift training video made by Troma in German. Have some patience because the twist doesn't happen till about 3 minutes in.

Dirty on Purpose recently embarked on a 2 1/2 week tour with a couple of classic indie rock groups. The first leg of the mini-tour was with The Wedding Present, the second with The New Year. The latter is the latest band from the founders of Bedhead, a group that may just be one of Dirty On Purpose's most influential luminaries.

The way George (DOP guitarist) tells it, he and Joe Jurewicz (DOP guitar/vox) started out hanging together at the defunct Pourhouse Bar in Brooklyn. This bar is now known as Legion (Metropolitan Ave. in Brooklyn) and still has the "back room", which is where Joe would host open mic nights. Anyone who has been there may remember the double headed cartoon mural on the back wall- well, Joe and George painted that. Anyway, the one band that supposedly brought these two together to kickstart their own was, you guessed it, BEDHEAD! The great mood-swing dynamics, the understated well-crafted melodies, the epic and almost post-rock breakdowns, the love of these ideas is what brought the dream of Dirty On Purpose together. And here they are out on the road with THOSE GUYS, the ones they had listened to for so many miles of road in the tour van. Now they're riding beside them! The New Year branch didn't fall to far from the Bedhead tree either, so if your gonna be around these town for any of these dates and happen to be a fan of either, I'd take in both.

Great music is being made everywhere. All around you, in hair follicles, in the air we breathe. Bands like Crystal Stilts with vocals breaking in bathtub, reverb soaking. Deerhunter’s music makes me excited about music in a way I haven’t been for years. They are brilliant geniuses from Atlanta and every time I listen to them, I hear something new. So original is the latest album that I spent 2 hours drunkenly trying to describe it to my friend. My Teenage Stride and their pop craftsmanship is a milkshake? A Place To Bury Strangers live show cannot be beaten by any other band. Their music is a cold bolt thunder electrocution to the heart. High Places remind me of Joni Mitchell, Caribbean, Caucasian bedroom music. The Muggabears write songs that people and bears can agree is amazing, except it's hard to tell because the bear can't clap very well. They are from Brooklyn and so is a lot of this stuff.
